From March 2009 ATM owners are changing the way that fees are applied to ATM transactions, by charging the ATM users directly. This change is part of a commitment by the industry to the Reserve Bank of Australia to make ATM fees more visible and up front. All Financial Institutions and other ATM operators will apply a direct charge for the use of their ATM, which they must display on screen at the time of the transaction.
Why is the change being made?
As part of a commitment by the industry to the Reserve Bank of Australia it will make ATM fees more visible and standardised for customers. All Financial Institutions and ATM owners will set its own direct charge in March 2009.
Will all ATM owners operate the same way?
All Financial Institutions and ATM operators will display the direct charge information up front before the transaction is carried out in a standardised way. Each Financial Institution and ATM owner will decide what other fees will be applied to card holders and how they will charge these fees.
How much will I have to pay to use an ATM owned by another financial institution or ATM operator?
Each Financial Institution and ATM owner will set their own ATM direct charge. The amount will be visible up front when you use the ATM at the time of the transaction. You will then have the option to accept or reject the transaction. As a Commonwealth Bank customer you will save on these ATM direct charging fees by using a Commonwealth Bank ATM, the largest ATM network of any Australian bank.
